Julia Jäkel

Professor

I am a new part-time professor at the Department of Psychology, and also professor of psychology at the University of Oulu in Northern Finland. In addition, I am affiliated with the University of Duisburg-Essen, University Hospital Essen (Germany), the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), University of Warwick (UK), and University of Leicester (UK).

My research and teaching span disciplinary boundaries, including psychology, education, and medicine. Main research areas are early life risks and long-term resilience, with a focus on educational contexts. I am involved with multiple longitudinal studies of diverse populations worldwide, and co-chair the Adults born Preterm International Collaboration (APIC).

My goal is to contribute to understanding the complex biopsychosocial mechanisms that control mental health, academic, and social development over time, to help design effective avenues towards evidence-based policies and interventions. One example goal is to reduce the barriers that multilingual children born preterm face in access to education and health services across Europe.
