This article focuses on leisure football and citizenship development in vulnerable
boys and is based on a community psychological project in Copenhagen, Denmark. The project included 45 boys (ages 12-16), a local secondary school, a local football club and researchers from the Copenhagen Centre for Team Sport and Health. Multiple methods were used. The results indicate that leisure football influences the development of empowerment and influence citizenship through: a) The positive significance of football to the boys, b) The opportunities for a varied everyday life, c) Commitment and discipline and d) Motivation. Furthermore, a co-creation approach seems of great importance for the boys’ development of citizenship.
