Hvad gør kunstkritik? Bidrag til forståelse af den aktuelle danske kunstkritiks funktioner i et historisk perspektiv

Research output: Contribution to journalJournal articlepeer-review

The crisis of art criticism has been a reappearing theme within the research literature on art criticism for the past 30 years. While focusing on art criticism in newspapers within the visual arts scene, this article gives an account of the different theoretical positions which in recent years have made this diagnosis. The article also looks at the different causes that have been given for the diagnosis. It is argued that the idea about a crisis is intimately con- nected with the upholding of a modernist ideal about the autonomy and disinterestedness of art criticism, even when contemporary art is characterised by a distinct mix of roles and functions (critical, artistic, art historical and curatorial). Thus, the recent changes within art criticism can be read as a symptom of a crisis for a disinterested critical position, but they could also be read as expressing examinations of the potentials in the new forms of art criticism which make explicit their interests, desires and engagements, an implicated art criticism. The article considers a few examples of Danish art criticism from newspa- pers to show how such changes specifically have looked within the past 50 years.
