Long Nguyen

Tenure Track Assistant Professor

I dedicate my work to developing novel frameworks and methods for addressing human health complexity, which I approach from a polymathic perspective. My work includes epidemiological/statistical methodological research with medical and public health applications; course leadership, teaching and supervision in public health and medicine programs; science democratization activities with societal engagement.

Primary fields of research

My research focuses on bridging separate worlds of knowledge to contribute to public health. Identifying myself as a generalist rather than a specialist, I adopt a polymathic perspective to address human health complexity. I favor diversification of skills and transdisciplinarity over specialization. My experiences and interests cover: causal inference methodology (matching and weighting methods, propensity score techniques and prognostic analogues, instrumental variables, g-methods, targeted-maximum-likelihood-estimation methods); prediction modelling methodology for clinical decision making using traditional regression models or AI machine learning; various other statistical topics (e.g. missing data, synthetic data, Monte Carlo simulation); data visualization, sonification and sensification; aesthetics of knowledge; scientific communication and democratization via culture and the arts; exhibition curation; community building.

My research is applied to diverse health issues – from COVID-19 response to cardiometabolic disease, critical care and perioperative medicine, occupational health, parent-child health, childhood adversities, old age medicine, drug prescription and polypharmacy, precision and personalized medicine. I have experience in working with different types of data, from large nationwide register-based observational data to international, multi-centre randomised controlled trials.

In short, my work spans over a large spectrum of methods and applications addressing human health and its complexity – which I tackle using a transdisciplinary approach, from statistics to arts.

Fields of interest

As an extension of my academic work, I have created a novel platform for sharing societal reflections in the popular neighbourhood of Nørrebro, Copenhagen, Denmark: a hybrid pop-up named nở · bro, which carries the idea of blooming and growing (nở in Vietnamese) and of bridging and connecting (bro in Danish). During two seasons (Jul 2022 and Jan/Feb 2023), I ran this pop-up and used a diversity of aesthetics to connect people around societal reflections in curated spaces including: art exhibitions with works of local artists; workshops/debates led by researchers of the University of Copenhagen; community dinners and other social events. The core idea of this ‘bottom-up’ initiative is to break down barriers between creative disciplines and practices, to integrate societal reflections into culture and facilitate knowledge-sharing within the local community. This project is highly transdisciplinary and has so far involved a diversity of actors/participants: academics, architects, artists, chefs, designers, researchers, students, tourists, volunteers, random visitors, and others.
