    Clinical Pig Medicine:

Research and teaching is based on the veterinary services to pig herds. Analysis and diagnosis of herd health status as well as herd management of health, immunity, production, economy, welfare, food-safety are central subjects.

Research and teaching is based on the veterinary challenges in pig herds. Analysis and diagnosis of herd health status as well as herd management of health, immunity, production, economy, welfare, food-safety are central subjects.

The research is based on methods from several scientific disciplines with main focus on population medicine. Since the conditions at the herd level are hard to reproduce experimentally, the research is most often coordinated with applied research in pig herds in cooperation with veterinary pig practitioners and the pig industry. Experimental laboratory studies are carried out in relation to e.g. disease mechanisms. Recent examples of research areas include herd diagnosis of enteric diseases post-weaning, antibiotic resistance, iron supplementation and hematology, diagnosis of gastric ulcers and urinary infections in sows, acute phase proteins, airborne transmission of infections and tail-biting. The teaching in pig diseases and health management is incorporated in a number of courses. In the veterinary curriculum an elective pig course is given in the production animal specialization,  lectures on pig health and diseases and practical herd health management in pig herds. Also students in animal science are taught. Bachelor and master projects are completed by 5-10 students per year.
